IMAV 2020: 12th INTERNATIONAL MICRO AIR VEHICLE COMPETITION
The International Micro Air Vehicle Competition (IMAV) is a yearly event that allows research groups from all over the world to share their knowledge, and stimulates them to focus on research that can be used in real life scenarios.
This year, the competition theme is “search and rescue.” This is motivated by the fact that Mexico sits at the boundary of three tectonic plates causing frequent seismic activity. In September of 1985 and in September of 2017, strong earthquakes caused severe damage to the capital, Mexico City, and some neighboring cities. In the aftermath, buildings collapsed trapping people and creating disaster zones whose access became difficult to bring aid.
Inspired by the scenario described above, the IMAV 2020 places a set of challenges where micro air vehicles could be essential in the search for victims, to get rapid access and a fast overview of the disaster zone, as much as to bring aid by air to the disaster zone.
Therefore, teams are expected to present novel ideas, prototypes and solutions aiming at paving the way for the next generation of micro air vehicles that can be deployed in real disaster scenarios such as the ones mentioned before.
This edition of the IMAV competition will be organised by the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE) in collaboration with the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) and the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP). These institutions are located in the city of San Andres Cholula (INAOE and UDLAP) and in Puebla (BUAP), the capital city, in the State of Puebla, México. The competitions will take place on the 17th and 18th of November, 2020.
Competitions are split up into two categories: indoor and outdoor competitions plus two special challenges. Both categories present challenges seeking to push the boundaries of the micro air vehicles’ technology currently available to date. Competitors are expected to present novel hardware and software designs, including aerodynamic designs, novel set of sensors, and exemplar capabilities such as: flight endurance; agile flight; autonomous flight; intelligent behavior; and swarming coordination.

To participate in any of the IMAV 2020 competitions, teams must submit a “Participation Request” as follows:

- The video must cover your team’s experience. The video should show the MAV flying in the air in manual mode and autonomous mode. If possible, an initial flight related to the competition missions
Instructions for the Team Description Paper
The Team Description Paper (TDP) must have 4 - 6 pages, detailing information on the technical and scientific approaches of the team, while including also the following:
- Team Name
- Names of Team Members (Team Leader should be listed first)
- Affiliations of Team Members
- Group's research focus and interests.
- Please, include a section of related work, especially citations to your work or the work you plan to use to build up your solutions.
- Please specify when you are using open-source software, libraries or software from other groups, including the appropriate citations.
- Brief, general description of the system when solving a task applicability in the real world
- Photo(s) of the MAVs
- Brief, compact list of your software architecture
- Brief, compact description of your MAV(s) hardware architecture
- The impact of your research/technological work must be clearly visible
- Indicate possible missions your team would tackle
- Maximum length is 6 pages (including figures and citations)
The language for the TDP, its graphics, tables and images must be English. Content in other languages must be translated. You may download a template for the TDP from the link below:

Criteria to Evaluate the Requests:
- Team description paper (clarity, scientific contributions or applicability in real world)
- Performance in local tournaments and previous competitions.
- Qualification Video (number of demonstrated abilities, integration, difficulty of the task, applicability in real world)
Team Code for Registration
After the participation request submission, teams will receive a notification of acceptance email indicating whether the team has been accepted or not. If accepted, a “Code for Registration” will be included in the email.

Preference Accomodation Fees for Team Members
Depending upon availability, INAOE and UDLA will offer rooms with a reduced price for team members competing in any of the competitions or special challenges of the IMAV 2020.
